Tumescent liposuction uses fluid injections, typically a saline base, injected into the area to be suctioned. The fluid loosens the skin over the area, and creates a fluid layer on top of the muscle, separating both healthy tissues from the fat. This allows the fat to be removed with fewer traumas to the surrounding area, reducing the amount of bleeding experienced during and after surgery.

This method of fat extraction takes longer than basic liposuction, because the injected fluid must have time to work its magic before fat can be extracted.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction, sometimes referred to as (UAL), uses a special extraction tube which issues bursts of ultrasonic waves into the surrounding fatty tissue. These waves hit the fatty area, and break them apart, essentially liquefying, and allowing for an easier, and more through removal making. After the fat tissue has been broken apart, it is removed using traditional liposuction techniques. UAL is a preferred method for removing unwanted breast tissue (especially in male patients), or fatty tumors, because these tissues tend to be more fibrous and thus harder to effectively remove.
